Combating Sudden Cardiac Death
by Dr Viveka Kumar - India Best Cardiologist
Today we come across numerous incidences where someone young from our peer group died suddenly. No major cause of death is present like Accident, Injury, Natural Calamities or disease like cancer or AIDS. The cause we usually come to heart is silent Heart Attack or Sudden Cardiac Death.
As the name suggest, a massive heart attack causes Death in such case. This is commonly seen in young adults. At times, the classic predisposing factors are also not there. And if they are present, these patients miss the diagnosis of their age. They don’t undergo the screening test as they are young and indulge into a stressful life & unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, junk food, taking meals irregularly, bad sleeping habits, lack of physical Exercise, etc. nothing can be better than diagnosing s disease in its infancy, but when a disease is already rampant, fighting against it is also as important as preventing.
The attack gives you enough time to act. The person does not die on the spot. One has about 90 minutes in hand. With every passing minute, the condition of victim’s heart deteriorates. One should identify the attack quickly. The presenting are Server chest pain, Paining radiating to neck, arm, shoulder or chine, Unexplained Sweating, Fainting, Vomiting, etc.
If you don’t find pulse or the patient has stopped breathing, than go for CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation). Cardiac defibrillator in an ideal equipment to have around in such a case. Everyone should learn to use it. It is simple enough to handle. All public places should have a Cardiac defibrillator in the emergency kit.
However, as we know, Cardiac defibrillators are usually not available. In such situations, there is simple series of steps to follow. Sit down on your knee on the right side of the patient .Kneel of left side. Put both hands one over the other on his chest where you think the heart may be (4th Left Intercontinental pact at mid mammary line). Start giving jerks hard enough so that the patient’s heart starts pumping. Please do not give up as this will take time & you might feel tired. Your strenuous effort will give life to someone & happiness to a family.
Once the patient recovers back, arrange for transporting the patient to the nearest hospital with cardiac facilities. The team of the hospital will stabilize the patient with a multi pronged line of treatment. One is that it will stabilize the patient and save his life. Secondary, it will halt the ongoing damage to the heart muscle & salvage the heart. Thirdly, it will work towards preventing recurrence of any further Heart attacks.
It takes a combined effort of public & Doctor to save one life. With increasing Education & levels of literacy, all that required is empathy. It is easy to recognize the disease and not too difficult to give first aid either. We have been recognizing epilepsies over centuries and helping victims with whatever knowledge we have. We can also save the young dying untimely of sudden cardiac Death.
